The Bell Jar Ascends

I’ve returned my copy
of The Bell Jar
to it’s rightful owner
mid reading in favor of
a book about a waitress
which I’m fast becoming

I don’t know what to think
about medication, the bell jar
has ascended on it’s own
it wasn’t easy, it was hell
but I put the book down
when it came to the squiggly lines
Plath’s poems had become
and the shock treatments
that followed-I put my
own prescription down
in the same moment.

My poems are not squiggles
theyre painful,
but they stay on the page
where I leave them
and I don’t want
your goddamned medication.
I can feel what I’m feeling
and survive it-
My book will end differently.
