This is why I find Thoreau humorous (he’s also kind of an asshole)

“One farmer says to me, ‘You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make bones with’; and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying a system with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle.”

  1. What makes him an asshole? Just curious. I’m a big fan of Thoreau. I’d be the last person to think that he was any sort of asshole. I take him very seriously (which probably says more about me, than about Thoreau). Thanks.

    1. Oh, he’s just sort of angsty and pompous towards the farmers in his town. He goes so far as to say elders have nothing worthwhile to teach the young and portrays people as morons who are wasting their lives.

      1. I see. Thank you. When you put it that way, I suppose his behavior does seem sort of asshole-ish. Hmm, it’s funny — I used to think that when I was younger, but now I think the complete opposite. I’ve probably turned into an asshole myself, that’s why.

      2. lol. It’s great to read the same book that’s been influential to you once every 5-10 years and see how your perspective changes.
