This is the year

it’s you and me against the seagulls kid

and the illicit lovers in pickup trucks

parked next to each other outside the dairy queen

the junkies outside the sketchier McDonald’s

which, by coincidence, serves the best coffee

the shoreline rising up to pound

the waves of the ocean for once

the people who look like theyre cut

from magazines the cardboard cutouts

of life unwinding the carnival on washington street

where we’ll find you a sister – i swear, this time i mean it

then it’ll be just be me and you and her and the seagulls

will all fly in different directions flapping their wings

and squawking wildly while we are laughing

this is the year itll happen
